Kefalonia
is the largest of the Ionian Islands and is one of the fresher tourist
destinations in the Greek Islands with tour companies operating
here for only some 20 years, and then still in a small way.
Only recently has the island been
recognised as one of the most beautiful and relaxing in the Greek
waters. The local people are becoming increasingly aware of the
necessity to protect the island's natural beauty, so that Kefalonia
should remain one of the most rewarding places to visit in the future.
There are many resorts to cater
to all tastes with:
Good sandy beaches
Watersports: parasending, windsurfing,
water-skiing and fun sports like banana boats
Boat trips and mini-cruises
Good food and fresh fish
Excellent local wines
Wonderful scenery and photography
Opportunity to travel further afield: Ithaka,
Athens, Lefkas, Zante and Olympia - among a few
With the most breathtaking coastline,
Kefalonia's pale sandy beaches invite the holiday maker to swim,
sunbathe, relax and join in the various watersports. Still relatively
untouched, the quiet mountain roads advertise themselves to the
holidaymaker who enjoys getting off the beaten track onto the trail
of adventure.
The uncultivated but fertile wild
hills, luxuriant woodlands and rugged cliffs are a botanist's heaven
and a bird watcher's delight. Photographers may indulge their passion
filming the wealth of colours and contrasts in an attempt to snap
the true essence of such an enigmatic island. The waters around
Kefalonia are frequented by the carretta carretta loggerhead turtles
and they use the sandy beaches in the south of Kefalonia to lay
their eggs.
Traditional tavernas and fish
restaurants are dotted about all over the island, lively bars and
discos around the town areas, night life is all casual but fun.

with a large variety of watersports available. Plenty of scope for
walkers and nature lovers.
Katelios is a smaller quite unspoilt village, famous on the island
for its fresh fish tavernas.

and village rooms are all situated in the village of Katelios and
in Skala centre with larger hotel complexes just out of the village
of Skala along the beach.

Small coves and beaches are just outside of town and the long sandy
beach and pebbly beach of Anti-Samos is spectacular and just a short
drive away.

in and out of town as far as Karavomilos village.

ASSOS
and MYRTOS
Although dramatically situated on a stunning little peninsula, Assos
is actually a charming but sleepy little village with just a few
shops and local tavernas.
A little beach is in the harbour itself and others are accessible
by boat. The famous beach of Myrtos is just 20 min's away by car.
Accommodation
To stay at Myrtos itself you need to camp out, but there are self-catering
villas and apartments in Assos either on the hillside with lovely
views, or on the waters edge itself.
