Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and is one of the fresher tourist destinations in the Greek Islands with tour companies operating here for only some 20 years, and then still in a small way.

Only recently has the island been recognised as one of the most beautiful and relaxing in the Greek waters. The local people are becoming increasingly aware of the necessity to protect the island's natural beauty, so that Kefalonia should remain one of the most rewarding places to visit in the future.

There are many resorts to cater to all tastes with:

With the most breathtaking coastline, Kefalonia's pale sandy beaches invite the holiday maker to swim, sunbathe, relax and join in the various watersports. Still relatively untouched, the quiet mountain roads advertise themselves to the holidaymaker who enjoys getting off the beaten track onto the trail of adventure.

The uncultivated but fertile wild hills, luxuriant woodlands and rugged cliffs are a botanist's heaven and a bird watcher's delight. Photographers may indulge their passion filming the wealth of colours and contrasts in an attempt to snap the true essence of such an enigmatic island. The waters around Kefalonia are frequented by the carretta carretta loggerhead turtles and they use the sandy beaches in the south of Kefalonia to lay their eggs.

Traditional tavernas and fish restaurants are dotted about all over the island, lively bars and discos around the town areas, night life is all casual but fun.

Resorts and Villages on Kefalonia

ARGOSTOLI
Capital of Kefalonia. Lively right through the year, you can stroll the shop lined streets and visit the local museums. The palm-lined paved waterfront of Argostoli is excellent for an evening stroll or you can enjoy a meal in the lively square while watching the world go by. There are a few discos and nightclubs in and on the outskirts of town.

Accommodation
There are a wide variety of small hotels, and a few self-catering units within and on the outskirts of Argostoli.

LASSI
The beautiful beach resort of Lassi is about 4kms from the town of Argostoli and has much to offer to all clients. The lovely sandy beaches are long and a wide variety of watersports are available. The various tavernas, bars and restaurants offer plenty of choice for the evening's entertainment. There are numerous mini-markets and souvenir shops in the area.

Accommodation
There are a wide variety of hotels, large and small, and all types of self-catering villas and apartment units in the area.
Lassi is an excellent choice for all ages and particularly for someone wanting a more lively and active holiday.

SKALA and KATELIOS
Two villages on the southern coastline. Skala (or Scala) is by far the more lively of the two with many restaurants, tavernas and local bars. Skala has a beautiful long sand and shingle beach with a large variety of watersports available. Plenty of scope for walkers and nature lovers.
Katelios is a smaller quite unspoilt village, famous on the island for its fresh fish tavernas.

Accommodation
Smaller family run hotels, self-catering villas, apartment units and village rooms are all situated in the village of Katelios and in Skala centre with larger hotel complexes just out of the village of Skala along the beach.
Skala and Katelios are ideal for a relaxing holiday discovering the local way of life.

POROS
A friendly village with its own harbour, tavernas and little bars around the main square.
A long white pebbly beach with clear crystal sea making it an excellent location for snorkelling. Lots of boat trips and mini-cruises available.

Accommodation
Smaller units, both hotels and self-catering are the type of accommodation available.

SAMI and KARAVOMILOS
Once just a port, Sami harbour is now lined with tavernas and bars. Karavomilos is a small village by a pretty little lake. Both are near the famous cave od Drogarati and underground lake of Melissani.
Small coves and beaches are just outside of town and the long sandy beach and pebbly beach of Anti-Samos is spectacular and just a short drive away.

Accommodation
Hotels, self-catering villas and apartment units are small, both in and out of town as far as Karavomilos village.

AGIA EFIMIA
A small laid back harbour on the east coast looking across to the beautiful island of Ithaka. Many secluded shingle bays for bathing. Crystal-clear waters are good for snorkeling, diving and sailing.

Accommodation
Self-catering units, smaller hotels, apartment units and village rooms are available in this untouched little resort.

FISKARDO
The only village surviving the 1953 earthquake, Fiskardo (or Fiscardo) is quaint, traditional, and a must to visit for all holidaymaker's. Small souvenir shops of all different types fill the small harbour and village, which is always busy, but relaxing.

Accommodation
All accommodations are small but with some very up-market self-catering villas, apartment units or even a yacht! See our yacht charter page.
Very much a holiday for the independent type of traveller and fly-drive holidaymaker's.

ASSOS and MYRTOS
Although dramatically situated on a stunning little peninsula, Assos is actually a charming but sleepy little village with just a few shops and local tavernas.
A little beach is in the harbour itself and others are accessible by boat. The famous beach of Myrtos is just 20 min's away by car.

Accommodation
To stay at Myrtos itself you need to camp out, but there are self-catering villas and apartments in Assos either on the hillside with lovely views, or on the waters edge itself.

LIXOURI
A very authentic and traditional town and harbour. Ideal for a quiet and relaxed holiday. The main square is famous for its lovely cakes and ice-cream shops. The red sandy beaches of the Lixouri peninsula are especially good for children. There is a frequent ferry boat service to the capital Argostoli.

Accommodation
Excellent family-run hotels, self-catering villas, apartment units as well as hotel complexes situated right on the beach.
Lixouri is a good choice for families.
